Supporting Highly Vulnerable Children in Overlooked Crises
UNICEF protects and supports children where their needs are greatest, including in humanitarian crises that receive little public attention. During armed conflicts, following natural disasters, in food crises or when essential services collapse, UNICEF helps ensure that children have access to protection, nutrition, safe drinking water, healthcare and education.
Thanks to its long-standing presence on the ground and close collaboration with local partners, authorities and communities, UNICEF can identify needs quickly, build on existing structures and deliver support where children are most at risk.

Three-year-old Wictour lives with his mother and younger sister in the Bentiu camp, where families displaced within South Sudan have found safety. The family was forced to flee after their village was devastated by flooding.
When Wictour recently became increasingly weak, a volunteer community nutrition worker recognised the signs of severe acute malnutrition. He was immediately admitted to a UNICEF-supported nutrition programme. Thanks to the rapid response, his condition did not deteriorate further, and Wictour is now continuing his recovery in a programme for children with moderate acute malnutrition.
